Confirm your calling and election: Grow in Christian virtues (2 Pe 1:1-11)

True gospel brings true transformation
- not outcome transformation, but character transformation

Simon Peter, a servant and apostle of Jesus Christ, To those who through the righteousness of our God and Savior Jesus Christ have received a faith as precious as ours: Grace and peace be yours in abundance through the knowledge of God and of Jesus our Lord. His divine power has given us everything we need for a godly life through our knowledge of him who called us by his own glory and goodness. Through these he has given us his very great and precious promises, so that through them you may participate in the divine nature, having escaped the corruption in the world caused by evil desires. For this very reason, make every effort to add to your faith goodness; and to goodness, knowledge; and to knowledge, self-control; and to self-control, perseverance; and to perseverance, godliness; and to godliness, mutual affection; and to mutual affection, love. For if you possess these qualities in increasing measure, they will keep you from being ineffective and unproductive in your knowledge of our Lord Jesus Christ. But whoever does not have them is nearsighted and blind, forgetting that they have been cleansed from their past sins. Therefore, my brothers and sisters, make every effort to confirm your calling and election. For if you do these things, you will never stumble, and you will receive a rich welcome into the eternal kingdom of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. (2 Peter 1:1-11 NIV)

Why is there a need to develop Christian character?
  1. If you are a genuine believer --> automatically leads to the character (a checklist if you have understood and applied the grace of God)
2. Consequences if we do not develop this Christian virtue
3. Anticipate future
What is Christian character?
Character is what you are in the dark (when nobody is around)
Christ like! (Restore the glorious image of God)

Character is based on life on the whole (not just isolated one incident)
* do you desire to pursue all these in increasing measure?

How to have this Christian character?
  1. Relationship with Christ - let His character touch us and shake us.
    • god has given us everything we need to lead a godly life
      1. Truth / promise (light = tell you the good vs evil! what is beneficial and not)
      2. HS = counsellor, as long as we are willing to turn to him and listen to the conviction, have the wisdom
      3. Example of Christ
  2. Partner with God (synergic)
    • Is your choice important if God is the enabling one?
    • Choose to be partner with God!
    • *spiritual laziness is obvious
  3. Sufferings
  4. Guarding our hearts and minds -> because it shapes your emotions, decisions and actions
    • The heart is the wellspring of life
  5. Keep good company (1 for 15:33)(2ti 2:22)
  6. Continue
When can we stop this pursuit of virtue? Character = second nature (subconsciousness)

It will be tough initially, but it will get easier because HS will help you

---------------

It is easy to put you away from the place. But your heart remains

Character is a entire thing, not isolated circumstances - don't fall into self-accusations. It is not to allow and encourage you to continue, but to introspect and renew in the word

Love is infinite, we will never say we love enough
