Jesus Calms the Storm
“That day when evening came, he said to his disciples, “Let us go over to the other side.” Leaving the crowd behind, they took him along, just as he was, in the boat. There were also other boats with him. A furious squall came up, and the waves broke over the boat, so that it was nearly swamped. Jesus was in the stern, sleeping on a cushion. The disciples woke him and said to him, “Teacher, don’t you care if we drown? (Sometimes, we also accuse god - do you even care about me? You are blind to my plight)” He got up, rebuked the wind and said to the waves, “Quiet! Be still!”(Jesus used the same word when he cast out demons. So there is works behind storm..satan always wants to shake our faith when we just resolute to do certain things..") Then the wind died down and it was completely calm . He said to his disciples, “Why are you so afraid? Do you still have no faith?” They were terrified and asked each other, “Who is this? Even the wind and the waves obey him!””
Mark 4:35-41 NIV
- Problems do not disqualify Jesus from having our trust.
- Many times, to the dismay of satan, problems often exemplify jesus's worthiness
- Whenever we think too highly of our problems, we think less of God's almighty power
We gather tonight because we find ourselves having certain unrest in our lives.
Uninvited storms in our lives --> we really need the word of God to guard our lives
What's the thing we tend to face in the storm?
- It's easy to forget that god still loves us, and He is in control
- We may even change the definition of truth (the voices in our head, the feelings, the problems easily become our truth)
Jesus is Sleeping?
Why He sleeps?
- We assume sleeping god is an indifferent God (doesn't care about us)
- Our feelings and analysis of the situation cannot be trusted (because we can never have the full picture)
- Sometimes, storm = test --> spiritual growth advanced (it can only advance when you have a steady r/s with God)
- Ps 121:3-4
- He truly was sleeping, but the greater truth is --> Jesus and us = same boat as us. He may look like he is asleep, but satan always makes you anchor on the wrong perspective ( he doesn't want us to see the greater truth than our truth of we have done something wrong, sin....)
- Satan always cover up the greater truth and divert us to lesser truth (wants us to agree with Satan)
Jesus is omnipotent and He cares!
Great - storm, calm, "fear ie awe" (v 37,39,41, 38/40)
The greatest of all is Jesus
Sleeping God = sovereignty (nothing in this world can shake him, make him fear)
God doesn't perform random miracles. He performed miracles that show his glorious eternal plan.
2 challenges here
- Challenge from men to God - You don't care
- Challenge from God to you - Do you still have no faith?
- *these seem legitimate.. Who wins? Which is more valid?
-
- God's demand is more valid than ours. We weren't there when god created all things. god knows better. And His unfailing love never fails
Pray till we can trust Jesus even in unthinkable situations
Opposite of trust - fear (problems has more weightage than God)
Solutions outside Jesus won't work
Pray - anticipate acts of grace
Faith is more than just agreeing with god in our mind (that you create me etc..); faith is trusting in the whole character/ person of Jesus
Escape vs humanistic
Muster our faith and pray to God to have mercy in us during the storm, don't escape.
Sometimes, god doesn't explain to you at your level but He affirms you with the greater truth. When you understand with the greater truth, the lesser truth doesn't matter anymore.
Don't wait until storm comes then only learn how to trust Jesus then. Before storm comes, practically, walk and commune with God regularly, now.
Storm is inevitable, because Satan exist.
But we can get ready, be prepared now.
