God's Power and Our faith <MK 5:21-43>

“And when Jesus had recrossed in the boat to the other side, a great throng gathered about Him, and He was at the lakeshore. Then one of the rulers of the synagogue came up, Jairus by name; and seeing Him, he prostrated himself at His feet And begged Him earnestly, saying, My little daughter is at the point of death. Come and lay Your hands on her, so that she may be healed and live. And Jesus went with him; and a great crowd kept following Him and pressed Him from all sides [so as almost to suffocate Him]. And there was a woman who had had a flow of blood for twelve years, And who had endured much suffering under [the hands of] many physicians and had spent all that she had, and was no better but instead grew worse. She had heard the reports concerning Jesus, and she came up behind Him in the throng and touched His garment, For she kept saying, If I only touch His garments, I shall be restored to health. And immediately her flow of blood was dried up at the source, and [suddenly] she felt in her body that she was healed of her [distressing] ailment. And Jesus, recognizing in Himself that the power proceeding from Him had gone forth, turned around immediately in the crowd and said, Who touched My clothes? And the disciples kept saying to Him, You see the crowd pressing hard around You from all sides, and You ask, Who touched Me? Still He kept looking around to see her who had done it. But the woman, knowing what had been done for her, though alarmed and frightened and trembling, fell down before Him and told Him the whole truth. And He said to her, Daughter, your faith (your trust and confidence in Me, springing from faith in God) has restored you to health. Go in (into) peace and be continually healed and freed from your [distressing bodily] disease. While He was still speaking, there came some from the ruler's house, who said [to Jairus], Your daughter has died. Why bother and distress the Teacher any further? Overhearing but ignoring what they said, Jesus said to the ruler of the synagogue, Do not be seized with alarm and struck with fear; only keep on believing. And He permitted no one to accompany Him except Peter and James and John the brother of James. When they arrived at the house of the ruler of the synagogue, He looked [carefully and with understanding] at [the] tumult and the people weeping and wailing loudly. And when He had gone in, He said to them, Why do you make an uproar and weep? The little girl is not dead but is sleeping. And they laughed and jeered at Him. But He put them all out, and, taking the child's father and mother and those who were with Him, He went in where the little girl was lying. Gripping her [firmly] by the hand, He said to her, Talitha cumi–which translated is, Little girl, I say to you, arise [from the sleep of death]! And instantly the girl got up and started walking around–for she was twelve years old. And they were utterly astonished and overcome with amazement. And He strictly commanded and warned them that no one should know this, and He [expressly] told them to give her [something] to eat.”

God powerful <faith> Man's limited

Jesus not only can help us in one area of need but all areas.
All miracle stories is to emphasise: If we have Jesus, we have the solution

God has power over all problems

Even death and sickness

  1. Overcomes uncleaness and saves the unclean
    • Our heart - unclean motive?
    • But Jesus can influence us with His holiness without being affected
    • The more we follow Jesus, can we also be like Him? Ie: we can mingle with unclean people, without being affected or defiled?
    • How did Jesus cleanse people of their uncleaness?
  2. "Reawakening" (Rebirth)
    • You can only be clean again when given a new life > like what Jesus did to the little girl "Talitha cumi"
    • When we wake up everyday, are we awakened to sense God immediately?
    • Often, sin corrupts us, we love the pleasure of sin (feeling proud, praised, and ambiguity) --> we like perverted joy that is outside of Christ.
    • God has given us miracle of birth, can we once again live in His awakening power to fight sin, hate sin and restore the right liking. -> His awakening power can transform us innerly and give us a different liking
  3. Power/ Mercy extensive
    • Jesus extends to all spectrum of people in the society
    • Mindful: don't be quick to conclude that "this person" cannot receive
  4. Cuts through hopelessness
    • Often, we interpret situations and get worried. But Jesus never accept our interpretation abt ourselves or the situations >> "what's this commotion about" because He is in control
    • What's all these commotions/ crying in your heart about? Why are you discouraged?
    • We lose wisdom (we didn't encounter Jesus) therefore we lose peace
    • Even our uncleaness have not separated us from the love of God (even the woman's uncleaness cannot separate her from God's mercy)
    • Never say never, until we quiet ourselves down and encounter Jesus in our hearts
What's our response to Jesus' "never say never?":

V36: Do not be afraid, just believe

  1. Faith comes from knowing
    • V27: she had heard reports concerning Jesus
    • Perhaps, we lack faith because we are unaware of certain truths. (We need to hear from HS, word, and testimonies)
  2. Outcomes of faith
    • Faith removes all fear (because God will always work for your good)
    • Your faith saves you [enables you to taste and see God's fulfilment of His promise] -> when we are not afraid of that "giant" anymore, that giant is no longer giant
    • Eternal salvation
    • Faith gives us courage, hope >> enables us to confront the "transformation" that has indeed happened. Be confronted by faith -> you'll step forward, albeit trembling with fear, but witness
  3. Faith during delays?
    • Glorify God more! He will make things work for the good
    • Jairus was delayed.
      • But the delay -> the woman get healed and saved, and Jesus performed a miracle that is more than healing the sick (his daughteR) but resurrecting someone from dead
      • God works in a supremely wiser and higher way -> that maximally benefit everyone He elected and resume the supremacy in our hearts

What is the problem you face today?
Can we acknowledge that we really lack faith?
