Full harvest, few workers (Mt 9:35 - 10:4)

“Jesus went through all the towns and villages, teaching in their synagogues, proclaiming the good news of the kingdom and healing every disease and sickness. When he saw the crowds, he had compassion on them, because they were harassed and helpless, (because they don't have a r/s with Jesus) like sheep without a shepherd. Then he said to his disciples, “The harvest is plentiful but the workers are few. Ask the Lord of the harvest, therefore, to send out workers into his harvest field.””
‭‭Matthew‬ ‭9:35-38‬ ‭NIV‬‬

“Jesus called his twelve disciples to him and gave them authority to drive out impure spirits and to heal every disease and sickness. These are the names of the twelve apostles: first, Simon (who is called Peter) and his brother Andrew; James son of Zebedee, and his brother John; Philip and Bartholomew; Thomas and Matthew the tax collector; James son of Alphaeus, and Thaddaeus; Simon the Zealot and Judas Iscariot, who betrayed him.”
‭‭Matthew‬ ‭10:1-4‬ ‭NIV‬‬

Jesus went to the helpless and harassed people - it is God who first came to our lives.

Finding joy in what we are doing. Do we?

God's truth can be very distant to our lives - do we really ponder: why are there so many churches but we still find people struggling?

Too theological vs over-contextualising our gospel?

Beware of the predators

Need for missions

Not merely need to Evangelize - but also need to shepherd as people are helpless and harassed

1) People are helpless and harassed -> not one-off problem/harassment; whole-life, whole person
2) Harvest is plentiful

Sent out workers (10:1-4)
  1. Due to Jesus's compassion,  and prayers of saints
    • Our prayers is important, can activate God to do the things that He has intended to do
    • Even though we know it is a hard journey, we pray - God still wants our participation.
  2. Disciples whom JC picked
    • They were called by His sovereign choice - He doesn't seek people's opinions
    • Called for a purpose
      • When you're called by God, we surely feel both joy and pressure at the same time
    • <10:1> empowerment/ authority
  3. Disciples are trained before sent
    • GOD gives you practice session
    • What is your practise session?
    •  Influenced by Jesus's heart, life
    • Not merely theory, but it becomes a culture
    • An ongoing process - eg weekly meeting, examine God's perfect will, so that we can be "Experts" in helping people see the perfect will of their lives, until we get our senses ie. "Spiritual recipe"
  4. Job description
    • JC: teach, proclaim and heal - do the same thing as what JC has been doing
    • Diagnose the problems of "patients"--> lead them to the Greatest shepherd and Healer
    • In order to do, we need to allow God to "throw us out" of comfort zone, go to unfamiliar people and setting
  5. Are you willing?
    • To be one of christ' worker?
    • For this urgent harvesting
    • Not just prayers but actions; not just intercessions but participation
    • Do not be afraid of failures
