Theology of Genesis: God, Man, Salvation

Theology of Genesis.

1) GOD.

  • Sovereign over all, Maker and Judge of all <Gen 1:1; 18:25>.
  • God of love, even His judgment comes with mercy <Gen 3:21; 4:15; 19:16>.
  • A Personal God <Gen 17:1; 26:24; 28:13; 39:2>.
  • His love also comes with demands <Gen 22>.
  • God’s ways are always perfect <Gen 50:20>.

2) MAN.

  • Made in the image of God <Gen 1:26-27>.
  • Created to serve God’s purpose <Gen 1:28>.
  • Man’s fall and sin led to suffering and curse <Gen 3>.

3) SALVATION.

  • God promised salvation through the seed of the woman <Gen 3:15>.
  • God elects people into His salvation  Salvation is by God’s grace, not by human qualities.
  • Sinners are justified by faith <Gen 15:6; Heb 11:6>.
  • Salvation  Sanctification

Exodus.

1) Background.

  • <Ex 12:40> Now the length of time the Israelite people lived in Egypt was 430 years.
  • <Gen 15:13> “Know for certain that for four hundred yearsyour descendants will be strangers in a country not their own and that they will be enslaved and mistreated there.
  • <Gen 15:16> In the fourth generation your descendants will come back here…

2) Key events.

(1) Ten plagues <Ex 7-11>: Unmatched victory of God.

(2) First Passover <Ex 12>: Saved by the blood of the lamb.

  • <Ex 12:13> The blood will be a sign for you on the houses where you are, and when I see the blood, I will pass over No destructive plague will touch you when I strike Egypt.
  • <Ex 12> 30 Pharaoh and all his officials and all the Egyptians got up during the night, and there was loud wailingin Egypt, for there was not a house without someone dead. 31 During the night Pharaoh summoned Moses and Aaron and said, “Up! Leave my people, you and the Israelites! Go, worship the Lord as you have requested. 32 Take your flocks and herds, as you have said, and go. And also bless ”

(3) Crossing of the Red Sea <Ex 14>: Passing from death to new life.

  • <Ex 14:30> That day theLord saved Israel from the hands of the Egyptians, and Israel saw the Egyptians lying dead on the shore.

(4) The Law (Ten Commandments) <Ex 20> and the Covenant <Ex 24>: Holy people set apart for a Holy God

  • <Ex 24:8> Moses then took the blood, sprinkled it on the people and said, “This is the blood of the covenant that the Lord has made with you in accordance with all these words.”
  • Another kind of ‘exodus’ – exodus from the old life.

(5) Building the Tabernacle: God’s Presence and dwelling among men

  • <Ex 25> 8 “Then have them make a sanctuaryfor me, and I will dwell among them. 9 Make this tabernacle and all its furnishings exactly like the pattern I will show you.
  • <Ex 33:14> TheLord replied, “My Presence will go with you, and I will give you rest.”
  • “If your Presencedoes not go with us, do not send us up from here.” <Ex 33:15>

3) Key themes

(1) Deliverance/Salvation.

  • Israelites were freed not to be their own master and live as they please.
  • <Ex 8:1> Then theLord said to Moses, “Go to Pharaoh and say to him, ‘This is what the Lord says: Let my people go, so that they may worship  (Also <Ex 7:16; 9:1; 9:13>)
  • Salvation: Changing masters from sin to God.
  • <Ex 6> 6 “Therefore, say to the Israelites: ‘I am theLord, and I will bring you out from under the yoke of the Egyptians. I will free you from being slaves to them, and I will redeem you with an outstretched arm and with mighty acts of judgment. 7 I will take you as my own people, and I will be your God. Then you will know that I am the Lord your God, who brought you out from under the yoke of the Egyptians. 8 And I will bring you to the land I swore with uplifted hand to give to Abraham, to Isaac and to Jacob. I will give it to you as a possession. I am the Lord.’”
  • Both Genesis and Exodus point to salvation in Christ Jesus: <Gen 3:15> – Seed of the woman; <Ex 12> – Passover lamb.

(2) Covenant (benefits and obligations).

  • <Ex 6> 2 God also said to Moses, “I am theLord. 3 I appeared to Abraham, to Isaac and to Jacob as God Almighty, but by my name the Lord I did not make myself fully known to them. 4 I also established my covenant with them to give them the land of Canaan, where they resided as foreigners. 5 Moreover, I have heard the groaning of the Israelites, whom the Egyptians are enslaving, and I have remembered my covenant.
  • <Ex 19> 5 Now if you obey me fullyand keep my covenant, then out of all nations you will be my treasured possession. Although the whole earth is mine, 6 you will be for me a kingdom of priests and a holy nation.’ These are the words you are to speak to the Israelites.”
